AI for family law: financial disclosure and bundle preparation
Use AI to organise family-law financial disclosure, track missing statements and preserve source references. Keep document review and bundle approval separate.

For family-law solicitors, financial disclosure can mean receiving statements, valuations and correspondence over several weeks, with replacements and missing periods arriving later. A useful administrative system shows what arrived, what period it covers, who checked it and which requests remain open.
AI can assist with classifying documents and proposing extracted facts. The practical value comes from making gaps, versions and source references visible to the solicitor. It should not decide whether a disclosure is adequate or which documents belong in a hearing bundle.
This is a proposed workflow for England and Wales, illustrated with synthetic examples. It is not a client result or guidance on how to conduct a particular case.
Track each document against the request it answers
Use a register with a stable document identifier, source, receipt date, document date, period covered, version and review state. Connect the item to the solicitor-approved request list. A file upload is evidence of receipt; it is not evidence that the request has been fully answered.
An extraction task can propose the institution, account identifier, period and balance exactly as shown. Keep the currency, valuation date and ownership description attached to any figure. Use fixed, repeatable arithmetic for approved calculations and expose the inputs for checking.
| Synthetic situation | Useful system behaviour | Solicitor's decision |
|---|---|---|
| January and March statements arrive | Show February as absent from the requested series | Whether to request it and what the absence means |
| Two files have the same account and period | Mark possible duplication; preserve both versions | Which copy is reliable and relevant |
| A valuation is replaced | Retain the earlier source and mark the replacement relationship | Which valuation supports the current work |
| A scan obscures an amount | Flag an unreadable field and retain the original | Obtain clarification or use another source |
The examples are invented. They describe expected behaviour to evaluate, not measured performance.
A missing-document list needs an owner
For each request, record the requested item or period, the files received, the reviewer and the next action. “February statement missing” is useful only when the requested series actually includes February. Do not infer a missing asset from a gap in uploads.
In a fictional matter, three versions of a statement arrive under different filenames. The system can group them as possible duplicates and preserve their receipt history. The solicitor chooses the relevant version and decides whether the request is answered. Only that decision should close the request.
Use a separate reviewed list for client communications. It should carry the approved recipient and safe contact preference, so a document reminder cannot bypass the matter's communication arrangements.
Keep disputed information attributed
A proposed financial schedule should show where each entry came from and whether it has been reviewed. Conflicting figures should remain visible with their dates and sources. Asking a model to reconcile them can conceal the exact issue the solicitor needs to examine.
The same applies to a chronology. A source may record an alleged event, a statement date and the date a document was received. Store those as distinct fields. A reviewer must be able to correct an entry without altering the source material.
Treat hearing-bundle preparation as a separate stage
- 01Register received disclosure
- 02Track gaps and disputed facts
- 03Solicitor selects material for this hearing
- 04Check directions and applicable bundle rules
Family Practice Direction 27A, effective from 2 March 2026, addresses court bundles in England and Wales alongside case-specific directions. It distinguishes financial-remedy proceedings from other family proceedings and sets requirements for contents, structure and preparation. Its content rules do not make every collected document a bundle document. Family PD27A.
That matters to the software design. Keep the disclosure register and the proposed bundle manifest separate. A manifest is a list of documents selected for a particular output. Record the hearing, applicable directions, chosen source versions and the person approving the selection.
Only then should document assembly create the proposed PDF and index. Check pagination, bookmarks, cross-references, missing pages and whether the export contains the approved versions. Any AI summary remains distinguishable from an original document. The responsible lawyer confirms compliance with the current rules and directions before filing or service.
Design access and communication around the matter
Family files can include information about children, health, finances and domestic abuse. Define access by matter and role. Restrict exports and avoid copying sensitive material into general-purpose reporting logs.
The SRA's AI warning identifies confidentiality and inaccurate output as risks requiring suitable safeguards. Its professional-accountability requirements continue to apply when a tool helps prepare the work. SRA: misuse of AI.
Safe contact preferences should travel with any document request or update task. Staff need to see the permitted channel and recipient before sending. The intake workflow guide explains how to carry those preferences through an enquiry handoff.
Evaluate the complete preparation process
Begin with invented documents containing missing periods, inconsistent figures, replacements and unreadable fields. Have the responsible solicitor define the expected register and exceptions. Measure extraction, checking and correction together; compare against the current method on comparable material.
A useful pilot report counts source-reference errors, omitted documents, incorrect periods, unresolved exceptions and total staff time. An attractive summary is insufficient evidence that the work is ready to use.
The legal workflow hub places this administrative task alongside intake and knowledge systems. The document chronology guide explains shared source-tracing principles, although criminal procedure and data requirements must be assessed separately.
